Friday 29th May 2015, 12-5pm
Room 1.06, 18 Windsor Terrace, Newcastle University

How do we identify and understand ‘the North’: as a physical territory, shared idea, language, political arena, idealistic vision, imagined space, or curated body of work? Who has the right to define the North, and in what ways is it brought into being? In this final CSoP event of the current academic year we will explore varying understandings of the North, as constructed and applied over a range of disciplines, and consider the role ‘Northness’ has played in the evolution of ideas of place, locatedness and regions.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Penny Fielding (English Literature, University of Edinburgh) as our keynote speaker, alongside Dr Simon McKerrell (ICMuS, Newcastle University), Dr. Peter O’Brien (CURDS, Newcastle University) and Dr Michael Pearce (Department of Culture, University of Sunderland).

We now welcome abstracts from early career researchers and research students who would like to contribute to this event e.g. by giving a paper, running an activity, performing, or presenting work in progress for around 20 minutes.

Please send abstracts or proposals of no more than 200 words to Emma Coffield (e.j.coffield@newcastle.ac.uk) by Friday 15th May 2015.
