April 20th, 6.30-9pm
Join Cinema Politica Newcastle for their April event – The Culture of Resistance. This premiere director’s screening presents documentary film, Protestas, Propuestas y Procesos – a documentary tracing 10 years of social struggles and counter-cultural movements in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
This vibrant film follows arts collectives using music, mural painting, circus and photography as a tool for political resistance – sideline to major media and institutional structures. Faced with police violence and a harsh social reality, Lima’s youth has found its voice through counter-culture and autonomy.
Following the film we will have a Q&A with director, Pablo Malek – made possible through the generosity of the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University. Pablo is a member of the Colectivo Palante in Paris. He is a researcher and filmmaker specialising in audiovisual memory and social conflicts in Peru. Pablo is the author of several articles spanning topics such as gendered violence in armed conflict in Peru, and documentary films and transitional justice. His book, ‘Approaches, Discourse and Memory in the Non-fiction Audiovisual Production on the Internal Armed Conflict in Peru’ was launched in Lima in 2017.
To make the event accessible to all, tickets are £3 or ‘pay what you can’.
Northern Stage is an accessible building.
